Starting out as a business owner

If you follow me on LinkedIn, you’ll see that I try to be open about the mistakes I’ve made whilst growing this business and previous businesses.

If I was starting from the beginning, these are the 10 pieces of advice I’d give.

It’s okay not to know everything. Everyone starts with limited experience. Admit where the gaps in your knowledge are and embrace learning. That’ll earn you respect and trust.

Don’t try to fit in. As a business owner, you want to go against the grain. Standing out is more valuable than blending in.

Don’t let mistakes define you. Mistakes will happen. Acknowledge them and use them to learn, adapt, and grow. Reflect on what went wrong and how you can do better.

Take risks. I moved to Dubai in 2008 having never been to the UAE and it was a risk that paid off. Embrace the unknown.

Take control of your career. Assert your needs and boundaries confidently. Building my recruitment business and mentoring others required me to take charge and set clear expectations. Don’t wait for opportunities; create them.

Never get complacent. Stay hungry for improvement and consistently strive to be your best. Balancing work and family life, while maintaining a strict gym routine, taught me the importance of dedication.

Celebrate all successes, big and small. Recognise every achievement as a step towards your goals. From opening new offices to simple daily wins, every success matters. Celebrating keeps you motivated.

Upgrade your circle. Always connect with positive, inspiring individuals who uplift you, and avoid people who drag you down. Step away from the doubters.

Delegate as soon as possible. Empower your team by trusting them with responsibilities. This allows you to focus on strategic growth and mentorship. Delegation is key to scaling your business.

Never settle for an average team. Quality over quantity is crucial. Build a high-performance culture and avoid growing too fast. Pursue sustainable growth and employ a strong team.
